Our Story

Our poultry business began when Nigel and Wendy reared a few turkeys for their friends in 1965, this was alongside the busy market gardening business at Sunningdale, on the banks of the river Tamar in St Dominic.

This was a real success and everyone loved them, so each year they’d do a few more.

Into the 1980’s their sons Darren and Ian were now working on the nursery full time, and the numbers of poultry reared were into the hundreds.

The birds would go out to local butchers, restaurants and local customers who would return every year.

Into the new century and the business was thriving, Hunn’s Poultry was renowned for their turkeys, chicken, ducks and geese. We were supplying some of the top butchers around, which included Phillip Warren at Launceston.

In 2006 Darren left the business to take on the ‘Market Garden’ at Tavistock. This left Ian running the business alongside his parents and wife Dawn. Helped out at busy times of the year by the grandchildren and in 2011, eldest of the grandchildren Martin came to work at Sunningdale full time.

Numbers were now up to around 5000 birds in total each year.

Every year day old chicks would arrive in the summer months. They were then reared, slaughtered and hung onsite whilst getting the highest welfare standards, and best conditions to live in throughout their time on the farm.

2014 we lost Nigel, the main man of our business and family. He left a huge void, especially around the yard at Christmas or out in his van delivering.

On to 2020…. that was our last year of supplying butchers and farm shops, due to getting planning permission on the majority of our sheds.

Now in 2025, Martin has now taken a lead role within the business, helped and supported by Ian.

The business is at a much smaller scale but our focus is still the same that is has been from day one, to supply our customers with the quality product that we ourselves would like to eat.
